Acting Assistant Foreign Minister Goran Aleksic was on a visit to Ashgabat and, in his capacity as Special Envoy of the Serbian Prime Minister, met with Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan Rashid Meredov, on which occasion he delivered to him a letter from Serbian Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic to President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov.
The Turkmen side stressed that the Serbian side could count on their full support to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the country, while the Serbian side conveyed its gratitude to Turkmenistan for its firm position concerning non-recognition of the unilaterally declared independence of Kosovo. At the same time, Minister Meredov reiterated that Turkmenistan, building on the lessons learned throughout its history, had decided on pursuing a policy of neutrality, which implied balanced relations with all countries, as confirmed by the UN declaration, adopted in 1995.
They discussed intensification of the dialogue and realization of high- and top-level visits. The officials agreed to hold regular political consultations and activate an inter-parliamentary cooperation, exchanging views on the current situation in the bilateral relations and the prospects for their promotion, cooperation between the two sides in international organizations, and also improvement of the contractual and legal basis of bilateral cooperation.
Political consultations between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Serbia and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan were also held, at the level of Assistant Ministers for bilateral cooperation. The Serbian side was headed by Acting Assistant Minister Goran Aleksic, while the Turkmen side was led by Assistant Foreign Minister Berdyniyaz Matiyev. Both sides expressed their commitment to the promotion of the two countries’ relations in political and economic spheres, as well as in the fields of education, culture, science and tourism.
