Following the news that Suriname has recognized Kosovo as an independent state, First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Serbia Ivica Dacic said that this was, unfortunately, a result of the heavy pressure exerted by the sponsors of Kosovo’s independence on countries which have not recognized it so far, especially after their failure in UNESCO.
“All the countries doing this should be aware that this is an act against the territorial integrity of Serbia, threatening the Brussels dialogue as well.
It is not Suriname as such that matters here but the fact that behind Serbia’s back an immense pressure by some influential countries is building up to recognise Kosovo. This will certainly leave a mark on our bilateral relations with these countries.
Likewise, the Kosovo authorities could not help taking this opportunity also to make another lie: Suriname is the 106th country to recognise the independence of Kosovo, and not 111th, as Thaci claimed.
The Government of the Republic of Serbia will continue its principled policy and readiness to resolve all outstanding issues through dialogue, but it will never recognise the unilaterally declared independence of Kosovo as a flagrant violation of international law.
