First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Serbia Ivica Dacic met today in Paris, on the fringes of the 39th Session of the UNESCO General Conference, with the newly elected Director-General of UNESCO, Ms. Audrey Azoulay.
Minister Dacic congratulated Ms. Azoulay on her election to the post of Director-General of UNESCO, expressing his hope that the successful cooperation between the Republic of Serbia and UNESCO would continue in the future as well.
The Head of Serbian diplomacy conveyed his belief that Ms. Azoulay, considering her vast professional experience in the spheres of culture and information at both national and international levels, would succeed in finding solutions to numerous challenges having faced UNESCO in the past few years. In this context, he emphasized that consideration of a potential bid of “Kosovo” to join UNESCO at one of the upcoming sessions of the Executive Board or the UNESCO General Conference, would contribute in large measure to divisions within the Organization and to the further politicization of its work, contrary to its interests.
Taking into account the attention Ms. Azoulay had devoted to the issue of cultural heritage protection, he pointed out in particular the importance the Republic of Serbia attached to the protection of Serbian heritage monuments in Kosovo and Metohija, notably those inscribed on the UNESCO List of World Heritage in Danger, as well as the importance of UNESCO’s further engagement to this end.
The meeting between the Serbian delegation and Ms. Azoulay was also attended by Minister of Culture and the Media of the Republic of Serbia Vladan Vukosavljevic.
Thanking the Minister for the congratulations, Ms. Azoulay expressed her belief that the cooperation between UNESCO and the Republic of Serbia would continue in the coming period through the programmes and projects co-organized by UNESCO and the relevant institutions and organizations in Serbia.
She confirmed that she would direct her best efforts towards de-politicizing the Organization and placing its focus again on its core principles, also endeavouring to carry out her work by adhering to the principles of professionalism and impartiality.
