First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Serbia Ivica Dacic said this evening that Catalonia’s unilateral declaration of independence had no legal effect and pointed to the similarities with the unilateral act of Pristina.
“Serbia supports the integrity and unity of the territory of Spain, and this act is inconsistent with the Spanish constitutional system. Unlike the way other countries have reacted in the case of the unilateral declaration of independence of Kosovo, Serbia adheres to principles, and just the same does not approve of unilateral acts in any part of the world, including Catalonia. Our position is quite clear.
There are similarities between Catalonia and Kosovo on one basic point – that this is a unilateral step, a unilateral declaration of independence.
The path of Kosovo and Catalonia is the same, the only problem being that in this particular case, the great powers do not support Catalonia, whereas in the case of Kosovo, the interests were different.
The world should not be based on whether one is liked or disliked by the great powers, but on international law instead”, concluded the Serbian Foreign Minister.
